A few months back, I joined up with my parents for a road trip across the US. We departed from Sitka, Alaska by boat, then drove from Bellingham, Washington to Tampa, Florida. It was a two week trip, but well worth it! Having lived abroad or on small islands all my life, I never got the chance to experience life in the actual US. This trip allowed me to see so many different things I learned just how beautiful America actually is!

While on the boat along Canada, en route to Washington, there was an earthquake! We didn't know it at the time though. The boat was rocking ferociously and we thought the boat would flip over. We were told to stay in our cabins. It lasted about 30 minutes. When the rocking stopped, I turned on the radio and the news station was talking about an earthquake off the coast of Canada..which was where we had been! Our poor dogs had been alone below deck in the car (They weren't allowed up to the cabins) during an earthquake! >.<

As soon as we hit dry land, we got some food I went to Dunkin Donuts for the first time in 12 years, planned our route and took off. Because I didn't have a legal US license at the time, my parents handled the driving while I sat back and captured the sights. =D I felt like I was in a foreign country, finally seeing things I had seen in books, with my own eyes.

Being together for so long, naturally, we had moments where we wanted to rip each other's hair out, but in the end, I'm glad I got to spend this time with my parents.

In Montana, my mom and dad bought some food from a local BBQ, and the burgers were massive. I'm pretty sure there was an entire cow between those two pieces of bread. We found this rather humorous since on the way to the hotel, there were several fields full of cows... Whenever someone would pick up a burger, one of us would go "Mooooooooooo!" before the other could take a bite =D. I'm sorry cow. RIP.

We went to our first truck-stop! Of course, we kept an eye out for any overly-friendly men wearing cowboy hats and chewing tobacco. We've seen enough sci-fi movies to know that the acceptance of a single kind gesture from one of these men means sudden death. And of course, we all know TV doesn't lie...

Every time we crossed a state, my mom would stop at a gift shop and buy a shot glass for her collection. Jokingly, I told my mom I hoped we wouldn't get pulled over because the cops would see all the shot glasses and take us for alcoholics. Mom looks at me and goes: Those are for drinking?! I only wanted them because they're cute and little....THEY'RE FOR DRINKING?!?!

My mom has been collecting shot glasses from around the world for 5 years, but now that she knows they are for drinking, she's decided to collect bells.

Lol are you serious about your mom and shot glasses?! XD

I went on a roadtrip once just with my mom, from MI through Chicago area, over to Iowa and down to Missouri, then back again. It was a lot of fun. I think and even longer trip would be more fun but I can also see how it could put you on each others' nerves.

I've experienced a lot of earthquakes here in Japan but never by sea! Sounds like it was scary.

That sounds awesome! :)

It's so cute that your mum didn't realise that she was collecting shot glasses. I can imagine my mum doing something similar!!

Roadtrips are great fun! You went to Canada but on the west coast. ;w; I'm near the east coast and I'm glad that when you went you didn't get harmed during the earthquake.

That sounds like so much fun! I've actually been to a majority of the states in the US and it is a beautiful country despite political and economical disasters that are going on daily.

But it's great you go to experience it and especially with family <3 Although that earthquake did sound a little scary ><''

I love the shot glass comment... too cute! (What is it with moms and shot glasses, btw? lol My mom loves to collect those, salt & pepper shakers and snowglobes)

My friends and I are hoping to plan a road trip during the summer - We want to go to the States and visit some of those weird roadside attractions :P Anyways, that road trip sounded like it was so much fun :)

"An ugly duckling growing out of her feathers."

Hello. I'm Zia, and this is most obviously my journal. I write about my life between Japan and the US, and all the adventures I find myself in. People often say they are envious of the life I seem to live, but the truth is, I feel a little unsatisfied with it myself, so I've decided to do something about it--to find what really makes me happy. Hopefully by documenting my life, I can figure out where I need to be heading. This journal is my way of opening my world to those around me in hopes of meeting people searching for the same thing or encountering people who have already gone through this kind of struggle.

Back in my high school days, I used to be a bit of a nerd. I was really in to comic books of all kinds, action figures...all that jazz.  These days, though my interest in comic books re-surfaces every so often, I'm very much more in to things like fashion, dance, music, travel, tea, baking, writing letters, photography, animals and fitness. I'm a straight shooter--meaning I do not (or rather, can not?) lie. Keeping up with lies is too much trouble.

Anyway, there is more information about me on my profile. Feel free to take a look there or catch me on another site★
